A Must-Read for Hotel Procurement: The Hardcore Standards for Quality Towels

I. Yarn Count: The “Hidden ID Card” of Hotel Linens

Many friends who purchase hotel linens have asked me, “Why do some pure‑cotton towels feel as soft as clouds, while others are as stiff as sandpaper?”

The answer is hidden in four characters: Yarn count

Simply put, yarn count refers to the length of yarn that can be spun from one gram of cotton. The higher the number, the finer and softer the yarn.

Common yarn count specifications for hotel linens are as follows:

  • 21 pieces (21S) : Basic style, with a somewhat coarse and firm texture, typically used in budget hotels.
  • 32 teams (32S) : A mainstream choice, with a balanced softness and firmness; most mid-range hotels use it.
  • 16s spiral process : Excellent absorbency and softness, with mid-to-high-end specifications; the texture feels noticeably smooth.

I’d like to offer you a suggestion: Choose hotel towels with a thread count of 32 or higher. The thread count is too low—after a shower, guests feel as though they’re being rubbed with sandpaper, so don’t expect them to come back.

There is also a special case called “Joint-spun yarn” It involves twisting two strands of yarn together into a single thread. This process results in hotel linens that are stronger and more durable, with less shedding.

II. How to Inspect Goods? Three Tips to Help You Choose Quality Towels

Having worked in the hotel linen business for so many years, the thing I dread hearing most is: “They all look pretty much the same to me—let’s just go with the cheapest option.”

It’s very different—really, very different.

As a hotel buyer, keep these tips in mind during inspections to avoid being taken advantage of:

  • Criterion 1: Check the basis weight. For towels of the same size, the higher the gram weight, the thicker and more durable they are. A 400‑gram bath towel and a 600‑gram bath towel can differ in lifespan by several months.
  • Criterion Two: Examine the material. 100% cotton is the baseline, but cotton comes in varying grades. Egyptian cotton and long-staple cotton are undoubtedly top-tier, though they come at a higher price. For the best value, opt for premium Xinjiang cotton—it offers excellent softness and durability.
  • Criterion Three: Examine the craftsmanship. The denser the terry loops, the faster the towel absorbs water. You can do a simple test: lay the towel flat, pour a spoonful of water on it, and if it’s fully absorbed within 3 seconds, it meets the standard.

Three Signs That Your Towel Is “Sick”

As a supplier, I recommend that hotels regularly assess the “condition” of their towels. If any of the following three situations arise, it’s time to replace them without hesitation:

  • First, it becomes hard. A new towel feels soft and fluffy, like a cloud. If it feels rough to the touch—or even slightly scratchy—it means the fibers have been severely damaged.
  • Second, it turns yellow. That kind of yellow stain that just won’t come out no matter how much you wash it indicates the dirt has already penetrated deep into the fibers.
  • Third, odor. Even after washing and drying, a sour, foul odor remains, indicating that bacteria have taken up residence deep within the fibers.

A high-quality hotel towel is, in fact, the most direct “point of contact” between the hotel and its guests. Though it says nothing, the moment a guest picks it up, they can sense the hotel’s thoughtful attention to detail.

Soft, clean, odor-free, and lint-free—this is what hotel linens should be, and it should also be the first impression every hotel makes on its guests.

Next time you purchase hotel linens, why not ask one more question: What is the thread count of this towel? Which region’s cotton was used? And what is the lint‑loss rate?

You may find that the cheapest option is often not the most cost-effective.

And it’s the positive review from a great towel that truly delivers “value beyond price.”
